Giving back to God through the local church is an act of faith.

In a very real sense, God doesn't need our money. According to Him, everything we have and everything on this planet already belongs to Him. Giving back to God a portion of what He has given us is an act of faith. It's a decision and habit, on our part, to express gratitude for what God has given us and to express in a tangible way our dependence upon Him.

Generations talks about tithes and offerings. Aren't they the same thing?

The word, "tithe" literally means tenth or 10%. A tithe is the first 10% of your income. We encourage people to take a step of faith and tithe for two reasons:

  • It's a 4,000-year-old tradition that dates back to Abraham (before Moses and before "the Law"). Face it, bell bottoms didn't last that long.
  • It's really easy math. If you made $50, a tithe on that is $5.

An offering is anything and everything given back to God beyond that first 10%.

What's the big deal about tithing?

The Bible says the purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives. (Deuteronomy 14:23) Tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything we have. It is also God's personal invitation to an outpouring of his blessing in your life. In Malachi 3:10 (NLT), God says this: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it." This is the only place in Scripture where God tells us to put him to the test. In other words, He's saying, "Go ahead. I dare you. See if you can out-give Me."
